Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, LAZ is a unique creature. Part drink, part smoke, and part insanity, LAZ is slowly climbing their way inside the head of every man, woman, and child.
Formed in April of 2005 through a chance encounter
on Craigslist, the members of LAZ immediately
clicked, writing a song at their first meet. Less
than a month later, with no more than ten rehearsals
under their belt, the new
bandmates scurried down to
St. Louis, Missouri for an A&R showcase with label reps from
Sony, Capitol, and Island. Still without a singer,
LAZ performed an instrumental set of songs written
just two weeks prior. The intense response to the eclectic performance was
well received by the panel who praised the band for their inginuity, assuring
them that there was a place for their unique style
in the industry. The instrumentals could hold their
own, and once a singer was found, they were told
nothing would stop them. Label contacts were made,
promises were given, and the doorway towards the
future swung forcefully open.
Almost Five (5) years later, LAZ has become a force
in the Chicago music scene. Having played for packed
houses at The Double Door,
Elbo Room, The Note, Underground Lounge, Hot House,
The Republic, The Beat Kitchen, Subterranean, Logan
Square Auditorium, Schuba's and the famous Metro,
LAZ is turning heads. Even their homegrown following
has matured from thirty friends to more than a
hundred people who want to come see what the buzz is
about. Their web site averages a thousand plus hits
a month, with visitors from not only the entire
U.S., but England, Turkey, Canada, the Dominican
Republic, Australia, and even India. The tremors
have begun.
With LAZ, the music is the focus. Whether it's in a six minute epic, a fast and furious instrumental, or bass playing that must be seen to be believed, LAZ puts their musical prowess to the forefront. The lyrics, now written and performed by the original three acolytes, add a depth that rounds out the total aural experience, fufilling all that has been missing from the music of today.
Mid 2006, LAZ took home 6th place in the Emergenza
Battle of the Bands National Finals at Chicago's
famous "Metro". That's 6th among over a thousand
bands in Chicago and surrounding areas and Top 24th
out of five thousand in the nation. Sam, badass bass
savant, took home the 1st place prize for Top
Bassist in the competition, earning high praise from
both Big Whig Engineers and A&R reps alike.
December of 2006, LAZ moved on to the Chicago finals in the Bodog Nationwide Battle of the Bands. They were featured on FUSE TV, and broadcast to millions across the nation and Canada.
LAZ Melts Your Face. Simply put. They're coming through, fast and hard, so prepare now. Bow, and accept it. We'll be gentle. We promise.
